Use this guide when packing your checked bag. If in doubt, keep it in carry-on or check official guidance.
New in Aug 2025
- Cordless hair-styling tools powered by gas or butane (cordless curling/flat irons) — not allowed in checked bags. Allowed in carry-on only with a fitted safety cover; typically limited to one per person. Gas refill cartridges are not permitted in checked or carry-on.

🔋 Batteries & Electronic Devices
- Spare (uninstalled) lithium batteries of any size — banned in checked (carry-on only; protect terminals).
- Power banks / portable chargers / battery charging cases — banned in checked (carry-on only).
- E-cigarettes & vaping devices — banned in checked (carry-on only; prevent accidental activation).
Devices with batteries installed (e.g., laptops) are generally allowed in checked, but it’s safer to carry them on.
💥 Explosives & Incendiaries
- Fireworks, flares, blasting caps, dynamite, gunpowder, plastic explosives — banned in checked and carry-on.
- Realistic replicas of explosives/incendiaries — banned in checked and carry-on.
🔥 Flammables & Fuels
- Alcohol over 70% (140 proof) — banned in checked and carry-on.
- Gasoline, lighter fluid, butane/propane, torch lighters — banned in checked (many are banned in carry-on, too).
- Large quantities of aerosols outside “medicinal/toiletry” limits — banned in checked.
Medicinal/toiletry aerosols have FAA quantity limits in checked bags (aggregate ≤ 2 kg/2 L; per container ≤ 0.5 kg/500 ml).
🧯 Compressed Gases
- Compressed gas cylinders — banned in checked unless completely empty (visually verifiable).
- CO2 cartridges alone — banned in checked; exception: a life vest may include up to two installed + two spare (special instructions).
🔫 Weapons & Deterrents
- Loaded firearms — banned in checked (firearms must be unloaded, locked hard-sided case, declared).
- Self-defense sprays (mace/pepper spray) — generally limited to one ≤ 4 fl oz with safety mechanism; sprays with > 2% tear gas are banned in checked.
Ammunition may be allowed in checked if securely packed per airline/TSA rules; check your carrier.
🔥 Matches & Lighters
- All matches — banned in checked (one book of safety matches allowed in carry-on).
- Lighters with fuel — generally banned in checked (except up to two in a DOT-approved case). Torch lighters: banned.
