It's a question I hear all the time:

"Why should I use a travel agent when I can book it myself online?"

It's a fair question. After all, travelers today have access to thousands of websites, review platforms, supplier websites, booking engines, blogs, videos, and AI tools. Information has never been more accessible.

But after nearly 30 years in the travel industry and as part of a family business that has been helping travelers for almost 50 years, I've learned something important:

The real question isn't whether a travel advisor costs money.

The real question is whether a travel advisor provides value.

For some travelers, booking online may be the right choice. For others, having an experienced travel advisor can save time, reduce stress, prevent costly mistakes, and provide a knowledgeable advocate when things don't go according to plan.

What Does a Travel Advisor Actually Do?

Many people assume travel advisors simply make reservations. While booking travel is certainly part of what we do, the booking itself is often the smallest part of the job.

An experienced travel advisor helps clients:

  • Narrow down overwhelming travel choices

  • Identify destinations and resorts that fit their needs

  • Understand travel requirements and documentation

  • Compare options and value rather than just price

  • Coordinate complex itineraries

  • Monitor schedule changes

  • Provide assistance when disruptions occur

In many ways, a travel advisor serves as both a consultant and an advocate throughout the travel process.

The Most Expensive Mistakes Are Often the Ones Travelers Never See Coming

One of the most common and costly mistakes we encounter involves passport validity requirements.

Many travelers are surprised to learn that numerous countries require a passport to remain valid for six months beyond their return date. A traveler may have a passport that appears valid but still be denied boarding because it does not meet the destination's entry requirements.

Unfortunately, if this issue is not discovered before departure, the consequences can be severe. Depending on the supplier's cancellation policies and whether travel insurance was purchased, the traveler could potentially lose a significant portion of their trip investment.

Most people don't know these rules because they only travel occasionally.

Travel advisors deal with these issues every day.

If you ask me what the single biggest benefit of using a travel advisor is, my answer is simple:

When everything goes perfectly, anyone can make a reservation.

Over the years, we've helped clients through situations that no traveler could have anticipated.

When Clients Were Stranded After an Earthquake

One of our VIP clients was returning from Hong Kong when an earthquake disrupted travel operations in Japan.

While the traveler was literally in the air, our team was already working behind the scenes to arrange accommodations and prepare contingency plans.

The traveler didn't have to start from scratch in a foreign country trying to figure out what to do next.

They had someone looking out for them.

During the September 11 Attacks

When the attacks of September 11 brought air travel to a standstill, we had business travelers stranded throughout the country.

Our focus shifted immediately from making reservations to helping people find accommodations, remain safe, and return home as quickly as possible once travel resumed.

Those were difficult days for travelers and for the travel industry, but it reinforced an important lesson:

When travel disruptions occur, having a knowledgeable advocate matters.

During COVID-19

COVID presented challenges unlike anything our industry had ever seen.

Travel restrictions changed constantly. Cruise lines, tour operators, and destinations repeatedly announced reopening dates only to delay them again.

Many of our clients rebooked the same vacations multiple times over several years.

Our team spent countless hours monitoring supplier policies, processing credits, modifying itineraries, and helping travelers navigate an environment where nobody truly knew what would happen next.

Those weren't situations that could be solved with a booking website.

They required experience, communication, and persistence.

The Problem With Booking Online: Too Many Choices

Many people assume the biggest challenge with booking travel is finding a good price.

In my experience, that's usually not the problem.

The biggest problem is often information overload.

A family decides they want to take a vacation to Mexico.

Simple enough.

Then they discover:

  • Hundreds of resorts

  • Thousands of reviews

  • Multiple destinations

  • Endless room categories

  • Countless transportation options

  • Various insurance plans

  • Different suppliers

  • Contradictory recommendations everywhere they look

Eventually many travelers become frustrated.

We see it all the time.

People spend hours researching, comparing, reading reviews, and second-guessing themselves. Eventually they call us because they don't necessarily need someone to make the reservation.

They need someone to help them make a confident decision.

A travel advisor helps cut through the noise and focus on the options that actually fit the traveler's needs, budget, and expectations.

Is It Really More Expensive to Use a Travel Advisor?

This is probably the misconception that bothers me most.

Many people assume that booking directly with a cruise line, resort, or tour company automatically means they will pay less.

In reality, that's often not the case.

For cruises, vacation packages, tours, and many other travel products, travel advisors are typically compensated by the supplier. In many cases, the traveler pays the same price whether they book directly or work with a travel advisor.

At All About Travel, we do charge a modest booking fee for airline tickets because airline commissions largely disappeared years ago.

However, for many other travel arrangements, clients receive our expertise, planning assistance, and support without paying a separate planning fee.

The idea that travel advisors are always more expensive simply doesn't match how much of the travel industry operates today.

Supporting Local Businesses Should Include Travel Agencies

There's another aspect of this conversation that often gets overlooked.

I frequently hear people talk about the importance of supporting local businesses.

I couldn't agree more.

Yet many travelers who proudly support local restaurants, retailers, and service providers will book their vacations through massive online travel agencies such as Expedia, Hotels.com, or Priceline without giving it a second thought.

Those companies aren't part of your local community.

They don't sponsor local events.

They don't support local schools.

They don't employ local travel professionals.

Local travel agencies do.

When travelers choose to work with a local travel advisor, they aren't just purchasing travel services. They're supporting local jobs, local expertise, and local businesses that contribute to the communities where they live.

Who Probably Doesn't Need a Travel Advisor?

Let's be honest.

Not everyone needs a travel advisor.

You may be perfectly comfortable booking your own travel if:

  • You know exactly what you want

  • Your trip is relatively simple

  • You enjoy researching travel options

  • You have time to manage issues yourself

  • You're comfortable handling disruptions independently

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Who Benefits Most From Using a Travel Advisor?

In my experience, travel advisors provide the most value when:

  • Planning cruises

  • Booking international travel

  • Organizing family vacations

  • Coordinating group travel

  • Managing complex itineraries

  • Planning luxury vacations

  • Spending several thousand dollars on a trip

  • Traveling to destinations with entry requirements or visa considerations

The more complex the trip, the more valuable professional guidance tends to become.

So, Is Hiring a Travel Agent Worth the Cost?

For some travelers, the answer may be no.

For many others, the answer is absolutely yes.

Not because travel advisors have secret pricing or magical access to inventory.

Not because we can guarantee every trip will go perfectly.

But because experience matters.
